Summertime is right around the corner! Looking to explore the Mid-Atlantic with wheelchair-accessible summer activities? We’ve compiled a list of beaches, state parks, museums, and more ideas for you:
- Luray Caverns – Luray, Virginia – Looking for an adventure? Go underground in these Virginia caves. They also have an accessible outdoor garden maze if you are feeling up for the challenge!
- National Air and Space Museum – Washington D.C. – Launch into space with a visit to this museum! There are a ton of exhibits to check out including the accessible Albert Einstein Planetarium.
- National Aquarium – Baltimore, Mayland – This aquarium is among the top 5 in the U.S. All of their exhibits are wheelchair accessible, including their open shark tank!
- New River Gorge – Glen Jean, West Virginia – This national park has two accessible campsites: Glade Creek and Grandview Sandbar Campgrounds. Glade Creek has a wheelchair-friendly picnic area, fishing area, and trail! They also have a viewing deck that overlooks Brooke Falls.
- One Rare Adventure – This four day adventure is offered both in-person and virtually this summer! Founded within one family’s Duchenne journey, One Rare provides resources and opportunities for the rare disease community such as adulthood guidance, physical care, mental preparation, and emotional support.
- Reading Terminal Market – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – If it’s a rainy summer day then this might be the perfect place for you. It is an enclosed market that is all on one floor. The best part is there is a wide variety of foods for you to try!
- Shenandoah National Park – Shenandoah, Virginia – Enjoy the great outdoors at this national park. Skyline Drive has wheelchair-accessible parking spots at some of its overlooks so you can hop out of your vehicle and take in the views! Limberlost trail also has wheelchair pull-off spots so you can rest if needed.
