Flowers Family

Fundraising for an Accessible Van

A single mom, Kali, and her 11-year-old son have one thing separating them from everyday freedom and independence: a safe, accessible van for Lee Flowers who lives with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a progressive neuromuscular disorder causing a loss of motor, pulmonary, and cardiac function.

Lee is cared for by his mother in Waycross, Georgia. Diagnosed with Duchenne at six years old, Lee has lost his ability to walk and move independently. He relies on his mother to manually carry him both in and out of the home, risking both of their safety as Lee grows in size.

Kali shares, “Not only does manually lifting Lee create stress on our bodies, but he can’t bring his power wheelchair anywhere which is his only way of feeling a sense of freedom. Our car can’t fit the chair. Lee often forfeits opportunities to leave the home because it’s a very hard process.”

Through connections at Lee’s school district, as well as Duchenne support groups, Kali and Lee found their way to the Jett Giving Fund program. Now as participants in Jett Foundation’s Accessible Vehicle Fund, the Flowers family is aiming to raise half or more of the necessary funds for their accessible vehicle before Jett Foundation covers the remaining expenses and purchases the vehicle outright.

“We are simply looking forward to leaving the house together again, where we both can feel comfortable,” says Kali. “We appreciate any support the community is willing to give while we fundraise for our van.”

The Flowers family has met their fundraising goal and received accessible transportation thanks to supporters like you! You can still support our program and future program participants with a gift to Jett Foundation today:

All donations to Jett Foundation are tax-deductible to the extent allowed under applicable law and is an unrestricted contribution to the Jett Giving Fund. The family is working to raise half the funds needed for their van or more; when they reach their goal, Jett Foundation will cover the remaining costs and coordinate purchase and delivery of the vehicle.

How is the rare disease community accomplishing goals?

Tune in on February 29 to hear from our panel and moderators on how they are accomplishing goals and living life to the fullest!

Your gift helps Jett Foundation provide programming and opportunities, such as Camp Promise, to many families impacted by Duchenne muscular dystrophy each year.
