Summertime is right around the corner! Looking to enjoy the Northeast with wheelchair-accessible summer activities? We’ve compiled a list of beaches, state parks, museums, and more ideas for you:
- Acadia National Park – Enjoy the outdoors of Maine. This park offers several shuttles which are all handicap accessible. There are also several handicap accessible boardwalks including Jesus Path and Thunder Hole. You can also enjoy a stay or visit at downtown Bar Harbor right up the road!
- Castle Island – Castle Island has wheelchair accessible parking and walking paths. It’s a great park for a scenic picnic with family. You can also watch planes take off overhead and land from Logan International Airport!
- Coney Island – Take a trip to New York’s Coney Island! This beach has mats stretching the boardwalk to make it easier to roll onto the sand. They also offer beach wheelchairs.
- Mystic Aquarium – Take a day to visit thousands of animals at the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut. Check out their 750,000-gallon outdoor beluga whale exhibit or stingray touch pool! The aquarium is fully wheelchair accessible.

- One Rare Adventure – This four day adventure is offered both in-person and virtually this summer! Founded within one family’s Duchenne journey, One Rare provides resources and opportunities for the rare disease community such as adulthood guidance, physical care, mental preparation, and emotional support.
- The Butterfly Place – Go to the Butterfly Place to see and learn about all different kinds of butterflies! You can even pick up a Butterfly Hatching Kit so you can release your own butterfly at home. All areas of the Butterfly Place are wheelchair accessible.
