Join Jett Foundation’s Community Webinar Series on May 10 at 1PM EST as we welcome Michele Erwin and Alan Chaulet of All Wheels Up for a presentation and discussion on accessible air travel with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Air Travel with Duchenne – Presented by All Wheels Up
Wednesday, May 10, 2023 | 1:00PM – 2:00PM EST
Michele Erwin is the Founder and President of All Wheels Up. Her interest in accessible air travel began in 2011 when it became clear that traveling with, or as a person who has a severe physical disability and uses a wheelchair, was not safe. Today, Michele works to further accessible air travel through research and advocacy-related initiatives. All Wheels Up is the only not-for-profit organization in the world funding the research necessary of wheelchairs and wheelchair securement systems for in-cabin use. All Wheels Up works have be recognized in multiple publications such as Aviation Week, BBC, Yahoo Travel, Aljazeera America Magazine, US Today, Vice news, Wall Street Journal, and Frommer’s.
Michele has presented at TEDx, the FAA/DOT, the 2019 United States House Transportation Committee Hearing on accessible air travel, RESNA, airlines, and the Access Board. Today, All Wheels Up is consider a leader in accessible air travel research and is now consulting and mentoring on multiple projects for a wheelchair spot on planes.
Alan Chaulet is an entrepreneur fighting Duchenne muscular dystrophy. He graduated from Bentley University in 2013 with a Management degree and has been a big part of All Wheels Up since 2014, working alongside Michele, the organization’s founder. Alan is very active in the Duchenne community and serves on the Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy Adult Advisory Council, representing the voices of adults living with Duchenne and Becker in PPMD’s legislative, policy, and program activities.
As VP, his responsibilities include building and managing the marketing and social media team, managing the website and donation system, building the CRM and donor database, research of aviation, regulations, wheelchair industry, traveling with a wheelchair, laws, giving talks and interviews about All Wheels Up, fundraising, serving on the development committee, serving as co-chair for the wheelchair advisory committee, helping build the wheelchair advisory committee, and attending events with industry, regulators, and government.
From the beginning of his time at All Wheels Up, Alan knew it was possible for wheelchairs to fly in the cabin of airplanes and what was needed was research and an organization focused solely on proving it could be a reality. The work of All Wheels Up led to a feasibility study in 2021 that proved there were no design and engineering challenges so formidable that they call into question the technical feasibility of an in-cabin wheelchair securement system and the value of exploring the concept further.
Our Community Webinar Series is focused on ensuring that our Duchenne community is better prepared for those unexpected moments, challenging medical decisions, and difficult stages when on a Duchenne journey.
No one ever expects Duchenne and there is no correct way to tackle a diagnosis, but we can always better prepare. This webinar series is an opportunity to equip yourself with more knowledge, resources, and tools for those real-life, often unanticipated, scenarios.
