The Hall Family is from Speedwell, TN, living on a farm with cows, horses, dogs, and cats. Wyatt (14) and Barrett (6) Hall live with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a progressive neuromuscular disorder that causes a loss of motor, pulmonary, and cardiac function.
The family’s biggest hurdle has been transporting both boys to necessary appointments, school, and everyday activities. Duchenne has taken a toll on the boys’ bodies as they both require a power wheelchair to move about.
Wyatt and Barrett’s mother, Mindy, shares, “Barrett stopped walking in October of 2022, which has drastically changed the way that we have to do things in our home and during transportation. Our older vehicle was not safe for us and we had to lift Barrett out of his chair no matter where we went.”
The family applied to Jett Foundation’s Accessible Vehicle Fund as a means of support while Duchenne continued to provide challenges to Mindy, her husband Chad, and the boys. As participants in Jett Foundation’s Accessible Vehicle Fund, the Hall Family raised half the funds needed for an accessible vehicle. Jett Foundation then stepped in to cover remaining costs and coordinate purchase of the vehicle.
On December 13, 2023, safe and accessible transportation arrived in Speedwell for the family’s long-awaited celebration. They were joined by family and WVLT8 news station, who covered the Hall’s Duchenne journey and their van delivery during a news segment, which can be found here.
“We are very excited for the opportunity to do things together as a family,” says Mindy. “The boys can now ride together and be safe together with this new mode of transportation.”
