University of Florida Sigma Fraternities Fire Up Support for Duchenne Families

April 28, 2025

On April 11, 2025, the University of Florida campus came alive with the aroma of BBQ and the incredible energy of community giving. Hosted by the Sigma Phi Epsilon, Sigma Chi, and Delta Zeta fraternities/sorority, the second annual Sigma BBQ was a huge success, raising over $8,000 (and counting!) in support of families impacted by Duchenne muscular dystrophy. With a few more gifts still trickling in, the event has already surpassed last year’s fundraising total.

What began as a personal mission for TJ Bowen, a University of Florida student and close family friend of a young man named Dale Ginder living with Duchenne, has grown into something extraordinary. After attending a Jett Foundation workshop last year, TJ was inspired to get his fraternity to support the cause. He rallied fellow students, brought in other Greek fraternity and sorority organizations, and secured sponsors… all while juggling a busy college schedule.

“I felt so lucky to have the opportunity to organize Sigma BBQ again and continue to make an impact in the Duchenne community,” TJ shared. “Being able to spread the word about Duchenne to a community that might not be very familiar with this rare disease was wonderful. But I think the most rewarding part of this event came when I found out that we would be donating the past two years’ proceeds to Jett’s Accessible Vehicle Fund.”

Accessible vehicles are life-changing for families living with Duchenne, and knowing their efforts are going directly toward that cause made the experience even more meaningful for TJ and his peers. “It brought tears to my eyes. It truly has been one of the most rewarding and fulfilling parts of my time as a college student.”

Despite some last-minute challenges, the students pulled it off seamlessly. Between 200 and 300 guests attended, enjoying great food, live music, and a vibrant community atmosphere.

This year’s BBQ also had special significance as it kicked off SigEp’s parents’ weekend and coincided with Dale’s birthday. Celebrating the Duchenne community, Dale, and the families of the fraternity all at once created an unforgettable afternoon of joy and purpose.

“To anyone thinking about doing a similar event,” TJ added, “I say just go for it! When people see how unique and spectacular the Duchenne community is, and how important Jett Foundation’s work is, they want to rally behind the cause. Lean on your friends, family, and community. You’ll be surprised how much of a difference you can make.”

We’re beyond grateful to TJ, the Sigma fraternities, sponsors, and everyone who helped make this event a success. Your passion, dedication, and generosity are helping to create accessible futures for individuals and families impacted by Duchenne.

This year’s sponsors included: Advanced Turbine Support, Gainesville Eye Physicians, R. Murphy Construction, Farm Bureau Insurance, and Miller Building Group.
