Raising Funds for an Accessible Van

The Palmer-Hughey Family is from Atlanta, Georgia, and faces many challenges that come with having two boys diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Garnett Palmer (15) and David Hughey (5) were diagnosed with Duchenne at a young age. Garnett relies on a wheelchair to move about and David needs assistance when traveling for longer periods of time. Duchenne is a progressive neuromuscular disorder that causes a loss of motor, pulmonary, and cardiac function.
The boys are cared for by their single mother, LaToya, who has difficulty lifting the boys by herself and transporting them safely throughout their daily routine. LaToya has suffered injuries from caring for the boys and worries more as Garnett and David grow in size.
“Our family experiences isolation due to a lack of transportation to s

ee friends and family,” shares LaToya. “We are struggling both physically and mentally, miss medical appointments, use unreliable public transportation or Lyft, and can’t get the kids to school on time.”
Garnett and David have not been able to connect with fellow peers, an important element to their mental health and social life as children. They also miss out on after school programs, accessible sports, and enjoying time with friends or family.
As participants in Jett Foundation’s Accessible Vehicle Fund branch of the Jett Giving Fund, the Palmer-Hughey Family will aim to raise half or more of the funds needed for their accessible vehicle before Jett Foundation steps in to cover the remaining costs and purchase the vehicle outright.
LaToya shares, “I want my kids to feel safe and I want them to be able to participate in what they love. An accessible vehicle allows me to give them just that, everyday.”

The Palmer-Hughey family has met their fundraising goal and received accessible transportation thanks to supporters like you! You can still support our program and future program participants with a gift to Jett Foundation today:
